I believed I was quite skilled at packing until I began preparing my suitcase for a Lufthansa journey. I added a handful of clothes and some items I wanted to bring back and suddenly the suitcase felt far heavier than I expected.

The biggest lesson for me was that baggage rules should be checked at the time of booking of the night, before departure. The process took a few minutes yet it provided ample time to reorganise my suitcase if needed.

Now I plan to make checking the baggage allowance a part of my pre-trip routine.
